Type Locality and Naming

Metangula Basin (Mozambique). A formal lithostratigraphic unit recognized within the Karoo-aged Metangula Basin, which straddles the border between Mozambique and Tanzania. Upper formation in Beaufort Gr in Metangula Basin (Mozambique)

Lithology and Thickness

Composed of a terrestrial clastic sequence consisting of alternating mudstones, siltstones, and sandstones.


Lithology Pattern: 
Fine-grained sandstone


Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Overlies the Congresso Fm in the Metangula Basin.

Upper contact

Underlies or passes into subsequent rift-basin units such as the Tende Fm.

Regional extent

Correlates with the middle-to-upper portions of the Karoo rift successions (such as portions of the Lower/Middle Sakamena Fm or Beaufort Gr equivalents) in the eastern African rift basins. Geographically restricted to the Metangula Basin in northern Mozambique.
